Saga King (Vlad Duric) stages a mini upset at debut on Friday night.
He was able to settle the gelding on the outside of the leader Cigar Supreme (Alan Ng) before taking over with around 250m to run.
Ridden vigorously to the line, Saga King was able to hold off the challenge of the well supported Benji’s Pride which finished gamely after having an interrupted passage.
“He’s all legs and will only get better,” said Duric of Saga King. “I was going to take the drop on him, but when a couple of others eased I decided to go forward.
“In the end it was probably better giving him some room. He’s got a pretty big stride on him and the more room the better for him.”
Trainer Stephen Gray has returned to New Zealand for the upcoming yearling sale at Karaka and ‘B’ Trainer Jakki Harrison said Saga King had always displayed plenty of ability but had been immature.
“Mentally he is still a baby,” said Harrison. “Full marks must go to the owners who have been very patient with this horse.
“He’s always shown us plenty on the track, but has been immature and taken time to come right.
“I’m sure with this win under his belt he’s only going to keep improving.”
Harrison said she would like to thank the stable staff following the victory.
“They are the unsung heroes,” she said. “We have a good team of workers in the stable and all their help is greatly appreciated.”
Saga King is an Australian-bred three-year-old by King Cugat from the Rory’s Jester mare Evelynton and is a half-brother to the David Hill-trained Signature Beauty, a three time winner in Singapore.
